Boom Media, one of the most widely used services for pirated IPTV streaming, is being sued by the popular broadcaster in the US, DISH Network. Even though Boom Media brand name itself isn’t well known, it is the reseller for several popular IPTV services including Nitro TV, Epic IPTV, Beast TV, Vader Streams, MFG TV, OK2, and Murica Streams.
It is not a regular lawsuit as DISH Network is asking Boom Media to hand over the user data. The lawsuit was likely to be settled off-court. However, Boom Media is unwilling to share their partner and user information and hence they must take the case to trial. For that, they are asking for a donation of more than $250,000.
Boom Media LLC is allegedly run by two individuals – mother and son named Debra and John. While they operated the business in John’s name, the payments were received in Debra’s accounts.
John recently posted a video on YouTube pleading its users to donate the money to fight the case in the court so that they are not forced to share their users’ data with DISH Network. He says that to get the settlement in this lawsuit he will be required to surrender the user data. He is not comfortable sharing the data. Therefore, the case will have to go to the trial. According to him, $15,000 would only be a start. More donations will be needed. However, cases like these get prolonged and it is doubtful that even $250,000 will cover the cost.
He also says that such lawsuits have always ended in settlements and none have been taken to trial. Hence, the outcome cannot be determined.
If the case goes to trial, it will cost a lot of money. John is aware of this fact. He says he wouldn’t mind if he doesn’t get the support from people. But, he also warns that if he is forced to handle the user data, it will set a precedence for other lawsuits in the future. As a result, sharing user data might become the norm. Whatever happens to Boom Media might happen to others as well.
