In this post, I will show you how to turn off your FireStick. The methods in this guide apply to Fire Stick 4K and Fire TV Cube as well.
Some FireStick remotes now come with a power button. However, this button has nothing to do with FireStick itself.
The power button, volume controls, and mute button synch with the IR profile of your TV. When you turn the volume up or down with your FireStick remote, you are actually changing the volume of the TV.
Similarly, when you push the power button, you are turning off your TV. Even when your TV is off, FireStick is still running.
The good thing about FireStick or Fire TV is that it turns itself off automatically when left idle for some time (20 minutes). So, even if you just turned the TV off, after 20 minutes, FireStick will get turned off automatically.
However, if you want to turn it off manually, this is where the methods in this guide will come into the picture.
Remember that FireStick doesn’t actually get shut down. There is no way to switch it off unless you unplug it from the power source. Turning off implies that you are putting it in Sleep mode.
How to turn off FireStick / Fire TV
In this section, you will find 3 methods to turn your FireStick off.
This one is probably the easiest way to turn your FireStick OFF. However, as I said earlier, you are not truly shutting down your FireStick. You are simply putting it in the sleep mode.
So, here is how you put your FireStick to sleep:
1. Hold down the Home button on your FireStick remote for at least 5 seconds
The idea is to keep the Home button pressed until you see the following popup window
3. Now, simply click the Sleep option on the screen (image above)
You will notice that your device has gone to sleep and the screen has turned all black.
To wake up FireStick, you simply need to press any button on the FireStick remote.
Method 2: Turn FireStick OFF from the Settings
The Settings menu also lets you put FireStick to sleep. Again, you are not turning the device OFF, you are just sending it to sleep mode
Follow the steps below:
1. Go to the home screen of FireStick
If you are not there already, press the Home button on the remote once
2. Now, select Settings in the menu bar
3. When you are here, select and click the option My Fire TV
4. Scroll and choose the option Sleep
Your FireStick will now go to sleep. Again, press any button on the remote to bring it back from sleep mode.
Method 3: Unplug FireStick from the power source
This may seem rather too obvious, but it is the only way to truly turn OFF or shut down your FireStick.
Even when FireStick is in sleep mode, it keeps running in the background. Most of its functions are disabled in the sleep mode. However, many keep running.
To turn FireStick OFF, you may either turn the power switch off, pull the FireStick adapter out of the power source, or pull the power cable out of the device itself.
This would shut down the device. It is also a sort of hard reboot.
Wrapping Up
Amazon has not provided any functionality to shut down your FireStick. However, you can put it in sleep mode. When in the sleep mode, your device runs with minimal functions. You can turn it back on by simply pressing any button on the remote. So, that’s pretty much how you do it.
