Last week, several 1st-generation Google Chromecast users ranted on Reddit about their devices failing. Users could no longer cast some services on Chromecast, including YouTube, HBO Max, Hulu, and Chrome apps. What Actually Happened?
According to a Google representative, the 2013 Google Chromecast dongle is not being retired. The disruption was caused by a bug that impacted the ability to cast some services on Chromecast devices. They have since identified the root cause and resolved the issue, restoring casting abilities on affected apps.
“Earlier this week, a technical issue temporarily disrupted casting for some Gen 1 Google Chromecast users. Our team quickly identified the root cause and resolved the issue,” confirmed Sahana Mysore, a senior product manager for Google Home.
In a statement to Ars Technica, Mysore also said that all previously affected devices should now be working.
The Google Nest Community also confirmed to concerned Reddit users that the services had been restored.
“Circling back as promised. The issue impacting the ability to cast some services to Chromecast devices has been resolved. If you are still experiencing issues, could you let us know?” said GoogleNestCommunity on a Reddit discussion.
Most users have confirmed that, indeed, their Chromecast devices are working again.

Why the Panic?
To understand why the panic makes sense, you need to recognize what has been happening with the Gen 1 Chromecast device.
This casting dongle was released in 2013 and quickly became a fan favorite. It was a cheap, easy-to-set-up device that transformed non-smart TVs into streaming devices. It rose to fame at a time when legitimate smart TVs were expensive and poorly designed.

“Google is not ending support for Google Chromecasts, and the support page has since been updated with the latest and most accurate information,” said Google, in a statement.
While the bug fixes and continued support are a relief, broader concerns about the device’s future still linger. App support for the 1st-generation Chromecast has been quietly eroding for some time. The list of platforms and services that no longer support this device is growing.
Peacock explicitly dropped support for the device a while back.
YouTube and HBO Max also stopped recognizing it as a casting target way before the alleged bug that caused last week’s technical issue.
