The 2nd Generation Fire TV Stick HD is 30% faster than its predecessor and features the new Fire TV user interface.
Amazon has added a new model to its Fire TV Stick lineup, the 2nd Generation Fire TV Stick HD. Also dubbed the Fire TV Stick HD 2026, this model features an updated design, a better user interface, and a new operating system – Vega OS.

The company is promising the slimmest-ever streaming device with this model to appeal to users who carry their streaming devices on the go. However, at 30% slimmer than an already compact predecessor, the real-world difference is barely noticeable.
According to Amazon, the new Fire TV Stick HD is smaller in both volume and width than the other models. It is also optimized for direct power from the TV and doesn’t require a separate power outlet. Therefore, it easily fits behind the TV, even in hotel rooms where TVs are hung on the wall.
What’s New?
What sets the Fire TV Stick HD 2nd generation apart from its predecessor?
Performance/Speed
The new model is faster.
Sluggish performance was one of the most talked-about downsides when the Fire TV Stick HD first came out. The new-generation model addresses this issue, with Amazon claiming it’s “30% faster on average than the last generation HD stick.”
This is an interesting claim, seeing the new model still runs on a 1.7 GHz quad-core CPU. However, the improved performance may be due to the new Vega OS, which reduces loading times compared to the former Fire OS.
As Amazon reveals, “the new model turns on and opens apps more quickly.”
Hardware
The FireStick HD 2nd Gen draws power directly from your TV, removing the need for a wall power adapter. That’s one more power outlet for your other devices and fewer cables hanging behind your TV. That said, you’ll now need a USB-C cable for power, instead of the previous micro-USB cable.
For FireStick Users
ISPs, hackers, and other third-party entities worldwide may monitor your online activities. For security, privacy, and smooth streaming, it is recommended to use a reliable VPN for FireStick. Your IP address is visible to sites you visit.
I recommend ExpressVPN, a fast and secure VPN. It is very easy to install on any device, including an Amazon Fire TV Stick. Also, it comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee. If you don't like their service, you can always ask for a refund. ExpressVPN also has a special deal where you can get 4 months free and save 81% on the 2-year plan.

Operating System
A new update that has likely drawn the most attention is the operating system update. The first-generation Fire TV Stick HD used Fire OS, an Android-based operating system. The new-generation model runs Vega OS, a Linux-based OS that Amazon unveiled in 2025.
The Fire TV Stick HD 2nd Gen is the second model in the lineup to adopt Vega OS, after the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, which came out in October, 2025.
Replacing Fire OS with Vega OS may mean an end to sideloading, a feature that made the Fire TV Stick popular with cord-cutters. Vega OS is Linux-based and won’t support third-party apps, most of which are Android-based.
User Interface (UI)
Another improvement in the new stick is Amazon’s latest user interface, launched in February 2026. The new UI is faster, cleaner, and more organized, enabling users to get to what they want to watch sooner.
The main menu organizes content into movies, TV shows, live TV, sports, and news. You can pin up to 20 favorite apps to the home screen, a notable upgrade over the previous UI, which allowed only 6.
At the same time, the new device features Alexa+, the AI-powered tool that lets you get the best from your device. You can use it to find what to watch, control connected devices like cameras and speakers, and suggest personalized recommendations.
Alexa+ is currently available for customers in the US, UK, Canada, Mexico, Italy, and Spain, with more countries to follow.
Connectivity
Fire TV Stick HD 2026 supports Wi-Fi 6, an upgrade from the previous model’s Wi-Fi 5. It also features Bluetooth 5.3, a slight improvement from the previous version, Bluetooth 5. These improvements enhance the device’s support for clear, crisp full HD resolution at up to 60 frames per second (fps).
Display
Amazon is improving the display on this device through a new feature called Adaptive Display. The setting makes menus, texts, and content easier to see. It enlarges smaller items on the screen and proportionally scales content and artwork, creating a balanced browsing experience.
You need to enable adaptive display manually and select your preferred size from the provided options.
What Doesn’t Change?
The Fire TV Stick HD (2nd Generation) might be an upgrade of the 1st Generation model, but some features remain the same.
Processor
As we mentioned earlier, the new model is still powered by a 1.7 GHz quad-core processor. This continuity is evident in the performance, navigation, and daily use. Navigation remains smooth for typical tasks like browsing menus and launching apps. Streaming is in HD, with little to no lag.
Given that this stick is optimized for older HD TVs, a 1.7 GHZ quad-core processor is adequate for the casual user.
Storage
Amazon FireSticks are known for their limited storage space, with all of their sticks stopping at 8GB, except the Fire TV Stick 4K Max. The new Fire TV Stick HD 2026 maintains 8GB of storage, like its predecessors. This storage is paired with 1GB of RAM, which is usually adequate for the casual user.
Picture Quality
The supported picture quality is still 1080p full HD, with 720p available depending on your TV’s capabilities. Therefore, this device is best suited for TV owners with older HD TVs. If you have a modern TV that supports 4K, you might want to invest in a higher-priced model like the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus.
Video and Audio
Like its predecessor, Fire TV Stick 4K 2nd Gen supports HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG. Supported audio remains Dolby-encoded audio (HDMI pass-through). This model doesn’t support Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.
Pricing
Interestingly, despite the improvements and the fact that they are pushing an upgraded model, Amazon is still selling the Fire TV Stick HD 2nd generation at $34.99. It’s available for pre-order now and will officially release on April 29, 2026, in select countries. These include Canada, the US, Mexico, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.
The device will be available for purchase in Germany, Spain, Italy, France, Poland, the Netherlands, and Belgium at a later date. If you reside in these countries, check the local Amazon pages and sign up to be notified once the device is available.
Wrapping Up
The new Fire TV Stick HD (2nd Generation) is a practical pick for users who want to upgrade their old TVs to smart, stream-ready devices on a budget. It’s also a befitting choice for travelers looking for a familiar entertainment setup to take with them wherever they go.
That said, if you’re already using the 1st generation model, the improvements in the new model aren’t enough to justify an upgrade. Furthermore, if you chose the Fire TV Stick for its sideloading capabilities, you might want to keep the model that still runs on Fire OS.
