In this guide, I will show you how to watch BBC iPlayer in the USA (and outside the UK). This post demonstrates how to watch this service on Amazon FireStick, Fire TV Cube, Kodi, and a computer/mobile browser.
BBC offers a range of popular and quality content, including TV series, documentaries, docuseries, movies, and much more.
Many of their programs are available through various streaming services outside the UK. However, BBC iPlayer is where you can access just about anything that’s BBC.
Sadly, BBC iPlayer is not available outside the UK.
That doesn’t mean you cannot access it if you don’t live in the UK. This is precisely what I am going to show in this tutorial. As soon as you finish the instructions as provided, you will have access to:
- BBC One
- BBC Two
- BBC Three
- BBC Four
- CBBC
- CBeebies
- BBC News Channel
- BBC Parliament
- BBC ALBA
How to Watch BBC iPlayer in the USA or any other Country
BBC is a premium service that invests resources to restrict access outside the UK. However, you can easily access it by using the best VPN for iPlayer. BBC blocks most VPN providers, and only a handful can bypass its protection wall.
One VPN that works great with the BBC iPlayer without any hiccups is ExpressVPN. It is a premium VPN that unblocks Netflix and Hulu and facilitates torrenting.
One ExpressVPN subscription will work on any device you want to watch BBC iPlayer.
ExpressVPN is available at a 49% discount over its regular price when you buy its annual plan. You get 3 months free, giving you at least 15 months of high-speed and secure VPN servers.
It also comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee (no questions asked), which gives you sufficient time to try the service and decide whether to continue or get a refund.
Step #1: Sign Up for ExpressVPN
Please follow these steps to subscribe to ExpressVPN:
1. Click here to visit ExpressVPN.com and click Get 3 Extra Months Free.
2. Select your preferred plan.
3. Fill in your billing details.
4. Choose your payment method and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the payment.
You have successfully purchased an ExpressVPN subscription.
Step #2: Connect to a UK VPN Server

The catch is that the service will block any request outside the UK. Therefore, make sure you are connected to a UK VPN server.
Now, follow these steps:
1. Open a web browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, etc.) Type in the following link to the BBC registration page: https://account.bbc.com/register. Choose one of the options:
- Under 16
- 16 or over
I am choosing 16 or over.
2. Enter your date of birth and click Continue.
3. Enter your email address and password. Click Register to continue.
4. You have successfully registered a BBC account. Select Yes Please or No Thanks on the next page, depending on whether you want to receive news and updates in your email.
5. Open the email sent to your inbox and click the link to verify your BBC account. Click Continue to access exclusive BBC content.
This is how you sign up for a BBC iPlayer account outside the UK.

Denies young says
Hi,
Gone thru the steps to download/install iplayer on my fire stick. Only problem no cursor or selection box shows in iplayer. I can’t select anything to watch. Any ideas?
Max says
Hi Denies, try following our guide on how to install Mouse Toggle on FireStick.
Sandy says
I downloaded the BBC iPlayer app and signed in it can’t watch anything. I’m in the USA and using UK VPN. I looked up the error code 02001 and apparently you can’t watch BBC iPlayer with a VPN. So why does everyone say you can?
Article: “Why is the iPlayer error 02001 happening?
Unfortunately there are many reasons the error message is coming up. Below are all the reported reasons to date.
IP address
The app thinks your IP address is outside of the uk. Due to the rights agreement the BBC iPlayer service is only within the UK. You can only download and stream media off BBC iPlayer only whilst in the UK.
You are using a VPN
BBC iPlayer will not work if it detects you are using a VPN, this is to stop users outside of the UK using the service.”
Max says
Hi Sandy. If BBC iPlayer detects your VPN, it will not allow you to use it. BBC iPlayer doesn’t always detect a VPN, but once it does it will continue to detect it. You can try changing VPN location to a different location in the UK and try again.
Suzi Cooper says
Hi. I have installed expressvpn with subscription to my firestick but i player still won’t play – any suggestions?
Max says
Hi Suzi, I just checked and it is working for me. Please make sure that ExpressVPN is connected to the UK.
Richard Cairns says

Hello Pat where do you find the “try experimental video controls ” settigs? I could not see that in the iPlayer settings or on FireTV.
Max says
Hi Regis, I believe Pat is referring to the following: go to the BBC iPlayer app –> Settings –> Video Player –> select “New Video Controls – Try our experimental video controls.”
