Exodus is a Kodi addon that can only be installed on older versions of Kodi (18 and below). I have been using Kodi for a while, and Exodus is the name that I still hear, even though Kodi 18 phased out several years ago.
I honestly don’t understand why it still has some “fan-following” when there are tons of better options. It’s not that the latest versions of Kodi do not run properly on older devices.
The original developers have long moved on, and what’s left are scattered copies and patched versions floating around the web.
The idea behind Exodus made sense when it first appeared. It scraped streaming links from various websites and organized them into one simple menu. It looked convenient, maybe even a little too convenient. That’s the problem.
Most of those links come from unverified sources, and many point to copyrighted material. Some users have also reported malware warnings or shady pop-ups while using those links.
So when people bring up Exodus like it’s a hidden treasure, I understand the nostalgia. It used to be one of the big names in the Kodi world. But now, the risks far outweigh the rewards.
Between broken links, unreliable repositories, and possible security issues, it’s just not worth the headache anymore.

For Kodi Users!
ISPs, hackers, and other third-party entities worldwide may monitor your online activities. For security, privacy, and smooth streaming, it is recommended to use a reliable VPN for Kodi. Your IP address is visible to sites you visit.
I recommend ExpressVPN, a fast and secure VPN in the industry. It is very easy to install on any device, including Amazon Fire TV Stick, PC, Mac, and Smartphones. Also, it comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee. If you're not satisfied with their service, you can request a refund. ExpressVPN also has a special deal where you can get 4 months free and save 73% on the 2-year plan.

What are the Problems with the Exodus Kodi Addon
Exodus is more trouble than it is worth. From legal risks to privacy concerns and unreliable performance, it comes with so many problems that it becomes more of a hassle than a convenience.
Legal Problems That Cannot Be Ignored
Before getting the addon, let’s first understand what the Exodus Redux addon actually does.
This addon provides access to pirated content, including premium movies and TV Shows that are usually only available through paid subscription to other services such as Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and others. It also features public-domain content, but that’s not what it is famous for.
The problem here is that watching pirated content is illegal in almost every country, and getting caught can have serious consequences, far severe than just a warning.
Copyright holders lose significant revenue to piracy; therefore, they are aggressively trying to put an end to it. We are seeing more and more cases of legal notices being sent not only to developers but also to users.
It’s not just copyright holders that you should be worried about. Your Internet Service Provider is likely also tracking your streaming activity. If you are found violating copyright laws, your ISP may take action, ranging from a warning to cancellation of your internet services.
The VPN Misconception
Many blogs and forums often promote VPNs as a tool to stream pirated content safely. However, that’s not true at all.
While a VPN can hide your IP address and encrypt your streaming activity, it cannot make illegal streaming legal. You are still breaking the law even if you use a VPN to watch pirated content.
VPN is an excellent tool for privacy and safety, but it is not meant to hide or cover your illegal online activities.
Security Risks That Could Cost You
In addition to the legal troubles, Exodus Redux Kodi addon comes with numerous security issues:
- Malware Infections: Unofficial Kodi addons like Exodus are also unverified. The developers are unknown, and it is unclear what code they contain. Therefore, there is a significant risk that they will infect your devices with malware, spyware, and other harmful programs.
- Data Theft: This is another risk you must consider when using Exodus Redux or any other such addon. These addons connect you to numerous unverified and unknown servers worldwide, and you can never be sure which one might intend to steal your personal information. Furthermore, the streaming sources used by Exodus often redirect you to dangerous websites. These sites might try to steal your passwords, credit card information, or trick you into downloading malicious software.
Technical Problems That will Ruin your Experience
Apart from legal and security risks, Exodus comes with a long list of technical issues that can make your streaming experience frustrating.
- Constant Breakdowns: The addon does not host any content. It relies on external sources to pull video streams, many of which frequently go offline. You may find the movie title or episode, but not the links to watch them.
- Poor Video Quality: Even when links are available, their quality cannot be guaranteed. You may encounter continuous buffering, crashing, and choppy videos.
- No Customer Support: If something goes wrong with Exodus Redux, which often does, there is no one to hear your complaint. The customer support is not available at all.
- Installation Headaches: Installation of third-party addons is not straightforward. You have to jump through many hoops. Also, you may encounter multiple installation errors before successfully installing the addon.
Why Choose Legal Alternatives
The choice is simple: on one hand, you have Exodus Redux with legal, security, and privacy risks; on the other, legal alternatives with reliable streaming, legal compliance, and peace of mind.
There are numerous legal streaming options available, from free to paid, that eliminate the need to use illegal services like Exodus Redux.
Free Legal Streaming Services
- Tubi: A widely popular streaming service, Tubi offers thousands of movies and shows for free. It is an ad-supported platform that lets you watch classic movies, recent releases, and much more. It is entirely legal and safe to use.
- Pluto TV: Like Tubi TV, it’s completely free. It offers more than 250 TV channels and a vast on-demand library.
- YouTube: While it is best known for short videos, it also offers a vast collection of free movies and documentaries. It also features many titles you can rent or buy at a low price.
Personal Media Solutions
- Plex: Organize your personal collection of movies and TV shows and stream them anywhere. It also offers its own library of free, ad-supported VOD content.
- Jellyfin: It is a free, open-source software developed by the community. This alternative to Plex gives you complete control over your media without any ads, tracking, or subscription.
Budget-Friendly Paid Services
If you’re willing to spend a little money, some paid streaming services provide incredible value with high-quality and legal entertainment:
- Netflix, Hulu, Disney+: These services cost less than a pizza each month and provide thousands of hours of high-quality, legal content.
- Amazon Prime Video: Often included with an Amazon Prime membership, offering movies, shows, and exclusive content.
The Real Cost of Using Exodus
The seemingly free addon Exodus isn’t really “free” at all. It will cost you much more in the long run than legally paid streaming options:
- Antivirus software: You will need to pay monthly or annually to protect against malware from sketchy addons.
- Potential legal fees: If you get caught – which is a possibility with so much surveillance these days – legal defense can cost thousands.
- Device replacement: Malware can damage your device, and sometimes you will require a complete wipe or replacement.
- Time and frustration: Dealing with broken streams and technical problems will cost you precious time.
A Netflix subscription costs about $15 per month. Legal action for copyright infringement can cost thousands of dollars. Which one sounds like a better deal?
How to Build a Legal Streaming Setup
Nowadays, setting up a reliable, high-quality legal streaming service is easy, and you don’t even need to spend much. Let us find out how:
- Start with free options: Install Tubi, Pluto TV, and YouTube on your devices. These platforms will provide you with tons of legal content for free.
- Add one paid service: Add one streaming service that offers the shows you actually watch. Don’t waste money subscribing to everything at once.
- Build a personal library: Purchase legal digital copies of your favorite movies and TV shows. You can rip your existing DVD/Blu-ray collection. Use tools like Plex to organize your personal media.
- Use a local library: Many public libraries now offer free access to several streaming services, such as Kanopy, to cardholders. You can explore what’s available in your area.
Making the Smart Choice in 2025
The online streaming scenario has changed significantly since Exodus was first launched. Unofficial services are no longer the only option for free entertainment. Official and legal platforms are now competing with unofficial ones with cheaper, safer, and more reliable streaming. Here’s why you should choose legal alternatives over Exodus:
- Better Quality: Legal streaming services provide high-quality video and audio. You’ll get crisp 4K video and surround sound far superior to choppy, low-resolution streams from illegal services.
- Reliability: When you pay for a legal platform, it delivers. You don’t have to deal with broken links or server outages while streaming your favorite content.
- No fear of Legal Consequences: You can stream any content without worrying about surveillance, legal letters, or penalties.
- Privacy and Security: You no longer have to worry about malware infections or data theft.
- Support for Creators: When you pay for content legally, you’re supporting the people who have made it possible for you to enjoy the content, including actors, directors, and the entire crew.
Issues with Exodus in 2025
Current reports about Exodus reveal serious ongoing problems and why it is not worth considering:
- Repository Shutdowns: Most repositories hosting Exodus have been permanently shut down. Installing the addon is difficult now, and updating it is nearly impossible.
- Increased Malware: Reports from several security researchers indicate that Exodus installations now include malware and unwanted software that can harm your device.
- Legal Crackdowns: Many users are now receiving legal notices due to increased Copyright enforcement.
- Poor Performance: Exodus is outdated and unreliable, providing an increasingly poor user experience compared to legal alternatives.
The Bottom Line: Is Exodus Worth the Risk?
After reviewing everything, the answer is clear. Exodus Redux Kodi addon carries significant risks and is not worth it in 2025.
While it seems like a good option for free streaming, the legal risks, security threats, and technical problems outweigh it by a considerable margin.
There are plenty of legal streaming options that offer greater reliability, smoother streaming, and a superior entertainment experience.

Hi Suzanne, this CDATA error is happening due to issues with TVDB. It could take some time before it gets fixed. Meanwhile, you can follow this workaround : –
I suppose you have Exodus Redux. Open the Addon and go to TV Shows > TV Calendar. There you can access TV shows. That’s the best I could find during this error. I hope it helps.
I’m grateful that I found this discussion! I hope they have a fix soon on the TV part. If so will I be able to just update the addon from Kodi and it will work. Or reinstall all together?
Hi Casper, TVDB already fixed the issue on their side. Now Addon developers to make changes accordingly. Exodus Redux was last updated in March 2019, so I can’t say for sure if we can expect the update. However, if there is an update, you can update the addon by right-clicking it and choosing “Information”. There you will find the update option.
FYI, Exodus (not Redux) is now working fine for TV shows. You can refer the guide here – https://www.firesticktricks.com/install-exodus-kodi-addon.html
Thank you Patrick for the fast reply. Sounds like uninstalling redux and it’s back to Exodus again for me. Thank you again!
